Wild Finish Gives Men's Soccer Playoff Spot After 2-2 Tie at King's

Wilkes-Barre, PA (October 28, 2023) - The DeSales University men's soccer team scored two goals over the last 8:04 forcing a 2-2 tie at King's College to earn the last spot in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament next week in the MAC Freedom regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.


The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 2, King's - 2
  • Records: DeSales (5-6-5, 1-2-4 MAC Freedom); King's (5-8-3, 1-2-4 MAC Freedom)
  • The Bulldogs earn the #4 seed in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament and will travel to Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday with a time TBA.
  • This will be DSU's 11th appearance in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament and the first since the 2017 season when DeSales won its fifth MAC Freedom Championship.
  • DSU snaps a four-game losing streak to King's and improves to 24-16-5 all-time vs. the Monarchs. 
How it Happened
  • DeSales needed a win or a tie heading into today's game to earn a spot in the postseason tournament and had just that after a scoreless first-half.
  • King's, however, scored two goals in a span of 2:09 early in the second-half that put DeSales on the outside looking in to earn a spot in the postseason.
  • The deficit was still two entering the final 10 minutes of the game when sophomore Kevin Krall found junior Jake Hain on a corner kicks giving the Bulldogs and cutting the lead down to one with 8:04 left to play.
  • The clock was ticking down and went under four minutes to play with DSU still trailing when Krall struck again sending a long pass into the box over the Monarchs defense where fellow sophomore Liam MacDonald was streaking in for a header goal with 3:08 left to play tying the game at two.
  • Neither team found the back of the net as time expired and the Bulldogs escaping with a miracluous come-from-behind tie to qualify for the fourth and final postseason spot.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • It was Hain's second goal of the season and MacDonald's fifth.
  • Krall now has a team-high eight assists on the year, 
  • Sophomore Conner Zimmerman made five saves in goal.
For the Foes
  • Shane Serio had both of King's goals in the loss.
  • Buck Diacont earned an assist on the first goal.
  • Eric Siciliano had six saves in net.
Inside the Box Score
  • King's had an 18-13 advantage in shots, while DSU held a slim 8-7 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Monarchs enjyoed 6-3 lead in corner kicks.
