Baseball Opens Conference Play with Road DH Sweep at Wilkes

Edwardsville, PA (March 12, 2023) - The DeSales University baseball team opened up MAC Freedom play on Sunday afternoon sweeping a doubleheader at Wilkes University by scores of 6-0 and 7-4.

Game One (W/6-0)
First-year Mike Hooker was outstanding in his conference debut tossing 5 2/3 scoreless allowing just two hits and striking out three. Senior Will Manley earned his third save of the season getting the final four outs, striking out two.

This game was scoreless into the sixth inning when the Bulldogs got a run on an RBI single from junior Zachary Zuchowski plating sophomore Gabe Diaz.

DSU broke the game open in the seventh scoring five times including a two-RBI single from senior Billy Scanlon and a three-run double from junior Gavin Zavorski.

Diaz and sophomore Justin DeStaso each had two hits in game one.

Game Two (W/7-4)
A scoreless game into the fourth inning saw DeSales take a 1-0 lead on an RBI single from Scanlon.

Wilkes took a 2-1 lead with two tallies in the bottom of the fourth but the Bulldogs answered two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-1 lead. First-year JT Anderosky had a two-RBI double in the fourth and Scanlon hit a two-run home run in the fifth.

Senior Colin Trembley added a two-run home run in the seventh as the Colonels scored two unearned runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Scanlon had two hits and three RBIs and Tremble scored twice and knocked in two runs.

Sophomores Alex Chase and Mike Romano were both terrific on the bump as Chase earned the win throwing five strong innings allowing just one earned run, striking out three. Romano earned his first save of the year with two innings allowing two unearned runs, fanning one.

The Bulldogs will likely play game three of the series with Wilkes this week with a day and time to be announced.
