Baseball Splits DH at Schreiner to Open Texas Trip

Kerrville, TX (March 5, 2023) - The DeSales University baseball team opened up its trip to Texas with a doubleheader split at Schreiner University on Sunday afternoon.

Game One (W/3-2)
DSU got two runs in the top of the first inning as senior Joe Grigas IV hit a solo home run and sophomore Gabe Diaz singled, stole second, and scored on an error.

After Schreiner got one run back in the bottom of the first inning the score remained 2-1 heading into the seventh inning when the Bulldogs added an important insurance run on a single, sacrifice bunt, and Schreiner error.

Schreiner got one run in the bottom of the seventh inning before senior Will Manley closed out the win.

First-year Mike Hooker earned the win pitching 5 1/3 strong innings allowing four hits and one run. Manley came in to earn the save without pitching to a batter as junior Gavin Zavorski tossed out a base stealer to end the game.

Game Two (L/0-1)
Game two was a classic pitchers' duel as the Bulldog offense managed just three hits. DSU nearly rallied in the top of the seventh inning with two walks to start the inning but back-to-back strikeouts spoiled the rally as Schreiner held on for the split.

Sophomore Alex Chase was outstanding on the mound pitching a complete-game allowing just three hits, striking out five over six innings.

The Bulldogs are back on the diamond tomorrow when they travel to Southwestern University.
