Defense Carries #21 Women's Basketball in 53-37 Win over Lebanon Valley

Center Valley, PA (January 13, 2024) - The #21 DeSales University women's basketball team held Lebanon Valley College to just one fourth quarter point turning around a one-point deficit into a 53-37 win in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.

The Basics
  • Final Score: #21 DeSales - 53, Lebanon Valley - 37
  • Records: #21 DeSales (13-2, 4-0 MAC Freedom); Lebanon Valley (9-6, 3-1 MAC Freedom)
  • This was just the ninth career meeting between these two teams with DeSales taking an 8-1 lead in the all-time series, winning its seventh straight over the Flying Dutchmen.
  • DSU hands LVC its first MAC Freedom loss and is now the only team in the MAC Freedom without a loss.
How it Happened
  • DeSales scored the first six points of the game before LVC countered with nine straight as the two teams went back-and-forth in the first quarter before DSU settles for a 16-14 lead after 10 minutes of play.
  • Tied at 16 early in the second quarter, DSU used an 11-1 run to take a 27-17 lead but LVC scored the final eight points of the half to pull within two (27-25) at the break.
  • Neither team led by more than two points in the third quarter before the Flying Dutchmen broke a tie at 33 with a three pointer and senior Lindsey Welsh hit a floater in the lane to make it a one-point game (36-35) after three quarters of play.
  • The fourth quarter was a defensive clinic by the Bulldogs as they held LVC to 0-for-14 from the field and just one free throw with 52 seconds left, while also shooting 53.3 percent from the field on the offensive end, pulling away for a 16-point win.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Senior Megan Bealer led four players in double digits with 14 points, adding six rebounds and five steals.
  • Welsh and fellow senior Olivia Scotti each had double-doubles as Welsh posted 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, adding four assists and four steals, and Scotti finished with 11 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, adding four steals.
  • Senior Mikaela Reese also had 11 points, adding five assists and two blocked shots, pulling her within one block of tying and two blocks away from breaking the all-time record for blocked shots (182).
  • Sophomore Mikaili Donmoyer equaled Reese team-high with five assists.
For the Foes
  • Kate Fitzpatrick led the FLying Dutchmen with 12 points.
  • Cristina Fernandez had seven points and 14 rebounds, adding four blocks.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales held LVC to just 26.7 percent shooting for the game.
  • The Bulldogs had 32 second chance points, pulling down 18 offensive rebounds.
