Miracle Goal by Mazza Gives Men's Soccer a 2-1 Win over King's; Home Playoff Game

Center Valley, PA (November 2, 2024) - First-year JohnPaul Mazza scored with 38 seconds left lifting the DeSales University men's soccer team past King's College, 2-1, clinching both a spot and the #2 seed in the MAC Freedom postseason tournament on Saturday afternoon.

  • Records: DeSales (12-4-2, 4-1-2 MAC Freedom); King's (7-6-4, 2-3-2 MAC Freedom)
  • The win clinches a spot as well as the #2 seed in next week's MAC Freedom postseason tournament.
  • DSU qualifies for the postseason tournament for the second straight year and the 12th time in MAC Freedom history.
  • DeSales will host Misericordia University in the MAC Freedom semifinals on Tuesday with a start time of 1:30 pm.
  • This is the Bulldogs first win over King's College since the 2017 season improving DSU to 25-16-5 in the all-time series.
How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first-half DSU got on the board in the 68th minute when junior Liam MacDonald scored off a centering pass from junior Kevin Krall.
  • That lead stood into the 90th minute when King's tied the score at one at 89:01 on a header off a corner feed.
  • On the re-start, the ball was sent back to the King's keeper where Mazza hustled after it, beating the keeper to the ball creating a wide open net that Mazza scored at 89:22 giving DSU the win and the #2 seed.

  • MacDonald's goal was his team-leading 12th of the season.
  • Mazza scored his third of the year.
  • First-year Jimmy Shensky made six saves in the win in goal.

  • Cameron Jones scored King's goal and Philip Permyashkin had an assist on the goal.
