Defense Carries Women's Basketball to 44-31 Win at Mt. St. Vincent

Bronx, NY (December 7, 2024) - The DeSales University women's basketball team held Mt. St. Vincent to just 25.6 percent shooting for the game leading to a 44-31 win in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Today's game was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
  • DeSales extends its school-record road winning streak to 14-straight.
How it Happened
  • The first quarter was back and forth with neither team by leading by more than four points before settling for a tie at 11.
  • The Bulldogs defense took over from there holding the Dolphins to just two points in the second quarter on 1-of-9 shooting to take a 24-13 lead into the half.
  • The stifling defense continued in the third quarter as DeSales allowed just four points, holding MSV to 2-for-13 from the field to hold a commanding 35-17 advantage thru three quarters and DSU cruised in the fourth quarter.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • First-year Marissa LaVerghetta was DSU's only scorer in double digits with 12 points, adding nine rebounds and three blocks.
  • Senior Morgan Sterner had nine points and six steals.
  • First-year Kayla Ishigami came off the bench to score seven points.
For the Foes
  • Erin Smith led the Dolphins with eight points.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales also didn't shoot well hitting just 27.8 percent from the field but was an efficient 12-for-14 from the free throw line (85.7 percent).
  • The Bulldogs won the battle on the boards, 38-36.
  • DSU also forced 29 MSV turnovers leading to 19 points off those turnovers.
