Men's Soccer Opens Season with 3-0 Win over Gwynedd-Mercy

Center Valley, PA (August 30, 2024) - Junior Liam MacDonald scored two goals leading the DeSales University men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Gwynedd-Mercy University, in the 2024 season opener for both teams.

The Basics

  • DeSales remains unbeaten all-time vs. the Griffins improving to 19-0-1 in the series.
How it Happened
  • In the 18th minute, junior Joseph Reteneller found senior Mason Heitczman in the far corner and with a one-time centering pass Heitczman found MacDonald, in which he scored on a one-time shot. 
  • About seven minutes later the Bulldogs added to their lead thanks to a right-footed blast from senior Elek McDonald from just outside the 18, that gave DSU a 2-0 lead into the break. 
  • MacDonald added the exclamation point scoring his second of the game in the 57th minute on a header from a centering pass into the box from junior Kevin Krall, giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead and the win.

  • MacDonald scored his first two goals of the season.
  • McDonald scored his first goal of the season.
  • Heitczman, Reteneller, and Krall each tallied their first assists of the season.
  • First-year student Jimmy Shensky made two saves in goal and recorded the shutout win for the Bulldogs.
