Chester, PA (August 30, 2024) - The DeSales University women's soccer team opened the 2024 season with a 2-1 loss at Widener University on Friday evening.

The Basics

• Final Score: Widener - 2, DeSales - 1
• Records: DeSales (0-1-0 overall); Widener (1-0-0 overall)
• The loss drops the Bulldogs to 1-7-2 all-time vs. the Pride.

How it Happened

• Widener opened up the scoring in this one with a goal in the 14th minute off the foot of Alyssa Carman.
• It only took the Bulldogs about seven minutes to answer back and find the equalizer with a goal coming from junior Madison O'Connor, on a centering pass that was deflected by a Pride defender which led to a one-time left footed shot for the goal by Connor. 
• The Pride scored what would be the game-winning goal in the 55th minute on a penalty kick by Maggie Boyes. 
• DSU had plenty of scoring chances in the second half with six shots on goal but just couldn't tally the game-tying goal. 

Top Bulldog Performers

• Senior Emma Ribeiro led the Bulldogs with four shots, two on goal.
• O'Connor had the Bulldogs lone goal. 
• First-year student Saige Santa Cruz made one save in goal. 

For the Foes

• Carman and Boyes scored the goals for Widener.
• Nicole Rende was brilliant in goal making 11 saves in the win for the Pride.

Inside the Box Score

• Bulldogs had a 19-6 advantage in shots and 12-3 advantage in shots on goal. 
• Both teams each took two corners in the game.
