Field Hockey Opens Season with 4-2 Win over Moravian

Bethlehem, PA (August 31, 2024) - The DeSales University field hockey team completes the comeback from a first half deficit to open the 2024 season with a 4-2 win at Moravian University on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 4, Moravian - 2
  • Records: DeSales (1-0 overall), Moravian (0-1 overall)
  • The Bulldogs have now won eight straight season openers all of which have come vs. the Greyhounds as DSU improves to 12-8 overall vs. its local rival.
How it Happened
  • The first goal belonged to the Greyhounds but it didn't happen until there was 1:38 left in the second quarter, on a goal off the stick of Gia Ambrosino to give Moravian the 1-0 lead into the break. 
  • It took the Bulldogs just five minutes out of the intermission to answer back when senior Delani Remp found junior Morgan Benner for the game-tying goal. 
  • With one minute left in the third quarter, junior Brooke Sodl broke the tie to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
  • DSU dominated the third quarter, outshooting the Greyhounds 12-0 and taking all eight penalty corners.
  • Junior Jordyne Stong provided DSU with an insurance goal in the fourth quarter on a pass from senior Maddie Trocki.
  • Moravian answered back three minutes later on a goal from Lexi Dinsmore.
  • First-year student Sierra Margut pushed the lead back to a two goal cushion when Trocki tallied her second assist of the game, to post the final goal and give DSU the win.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Benner, Sodl, Stong, and Margut scored their first goals on the season. 
  • Remp tallied her first assist on the season while Trocki tallied her first two.
  • Sophomore Alyssa Schlossman made two saves and recorded the win. 
For the Foes
  • Ambrosino and Dinsmore had the two goals for Moravian. 
  • Maia Machado had eight saves in goal for the Greyhounds.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales held a 21-7 advantage in shots, 13-5 on shots on goal.
  • DSU had a 16-10 edge in penalty corners.
