Men's Lacrosse Secures First Win of the Season, 11-10, versus Messiah

CENTER VALLEY, PA (March 6, 2026) -- The DeSales University men's lacrosse team earned their first win at home, 11-10, versus Messiah University in non-conference action on Friday evening.  

The Basics  

  • Final Score: DeSales – 11, Messiah – 10  

  • Records: DeSales (1-5 overall), Messiah (2-3 overall) 

  • After the win tonight, the Bulldogs improved 3-7 all-time versus the Falcons.  

How it Happened  

  • Messiah struck early in the first with a goal in the first two minutes of the game, DeSales Jake Hurd responded one minute later with a goal off the face-off, assisted by Seth Young.  

  • Messiah found the back of the net two more time in the first, but a goal by DeSales Joe Cieleski brought the score at the end of the quarter 3-2.  

  • The Falcons went on a three-goal run to open the second quarter, Hurd was able to slash it with his second goal of the evening.  

  • A pair of goals from the Bulldogs pulled the score back up to 6-5 with four minutes left in the left in the second quarter.  

  • Messiah responded with two goals at the end of the second to bring the score 8-5 going into the half.  

  • The Bulldogs were hot coming out of halftime, scoring three goals, not allowing Messiah to respond at all. The third goal of the quarter, scored with six minutes left, by Young, tied the game 9-9. 

  • Three minutes into the final quarter, Messiah snuck in a goal, bringing them up by one.  

  • DeSales Colin Gertz, was able to find the back of the net to tie up the game 10-10.  

  • With one minute left in the fourth quarter, Blake Finnegan, shot the game winner, to bring the score 11-10 and give the Bulldogs their first win of the season.  

Top Bulldog Performers  

  • First-year Gertz tallied three goals, including one to tie up the game, two ground balls and one cause turnover on the evening.  

  • Sophomore Patch Day went 13-for-20 on the face off, giving the Bulldogs a clear advantage on the game.  

  • Senior Hurd hit his 100-career point, adding one goal and two assists for DeSales.  

  • Midfielder, Cieleski lead the team with three cause turnovers, he also contributed four ground balls and one goal.  

  • Junior goalkeeper AJ Ardizone finished the night with a .429 save percentage.  

For the Foes  

  • Quinn Foster had three goals and one assist totaling four points on the game.  

  • Caleb McCugh led the Falcons in cause turnovers with two.  

  • Goalkeeper Jourdain Algarin finished the game with a .577 save percentage.  

Inside the Box Score  

  • DeSales out-shot Messiah, 26-14, and had a 33-22 advantage in ground balls.  

  • The Bulldogs were 16-for-19 on clears for the evening and won the majority 15-of-25 face-offs.  

Up Next  

  • The Bulldogs are heading to Jacksonville, Florida for their spring break trip, where they will take on the Sweanee Tigers.
