Men's Soccer Downs Gwynedd Mercy, 3-0, in Season Opener

CENTER VALLEY, PA (Sept. 1, 2026) -- The DeSales University men's soccer team opened up the 2026 campaign at home with a 3-0 victory over the Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins on Tuesday afternoon. This is the 14th meetup between the two teams, DeSales is now 13-0-1 against the Griffins since their first match up in 2004.  

The Basics  

  • Final Score – Desales University: 3, Gwynedd Mercy University: 0  

  • Records – DeSales: 1-0-0, Gwynedd Mercy: 0-1-0 

How it Happened  

  • The Bulldogs were first on the board just three minutes into the game, after first year, Abu Barrie was able to take the ball around a defender in front of the goal, send it over to graduate student Colin Coffield, who sent the ball into the air, serving it up to Larry Sullivan who tapped in a header for the first goal of the season.  

  • DeSales defense worked to keep the ball out of their offensive zone and took away as many scoring opportunities as they could from the Griffins.  

  • The second goal of the night was scored later in the first period, 27 minutes in when first-year Jonathan Abboud, was able to tap in his first collegiate goal, assisted by Coffield.  

  • The third and final Bulldogs goal, was scored with six minutes left in the second half, from junior JohnPaul Mazza, assisted by sophomore Landon Lentz. 

Top Bulldog Performers  

  • Coffield ended the game leading the Bulldogs in assists with two on the afternoon.  

  • Junior goalkeeper Colin Hojnowski had two saves, not allowing the Griffins to get any goals on the board.  

For the Foes  

  • Goalkeeper, Cody Sell finished with four saves on the evening for Gwynedd Mercy.  

  • Midfielder, McCarthy Gomes ended the afternoon with two scoring opportunities for the Griffins.  

Inside the Box Score  

  • The Bulldogs led the Griffins with both shots (19-3) and shots on goal (7-2) during the afternoon contest.  

  • DeSales also took the 14-1 advantage on corner kicks this afternoon.  

Up Next  

The DeSales University men's soccer team travels to Penn College on Friday, to take on the Wildcats at 7:00pm. The Bulldogs will be back home on September 8th as they take on Muhlenberg at 5:00pm.
