Second-Half Spurt carries Mens Hoops past Gallaudet; Ohlson Breaks Assist Record

Washington, DC, (November 17, 2007) – The DeSales University men's basketball team used a big second-half run to pull away from Gallaudet University and earn a 79-56 win over the Bison in the 2007-08 season opener at the Gallaudet Field House.
 
        The DSU (1-0 overall) run was a 25-4 spurt turning a six-point lead into a 27-point lead over a span of eight minutes. The run featured scoring from six different guys including sophomore Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) with eight points and senior Phil Stricker (Womelsdorf, PA/Conrad Weiser) and junior Matt Zwetolitz (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) with five points each.
 
        The lead peaked to as high as 30 points once before the Bulldogs settled for the 23-point margin of victory. DeSales forced 19 Bison (0-1 overall) turnovers and had a healthy advantage on the glass out-rebounding GU, 46-28, for the game.
 
        Stricker led the Bulldogs with a game-high 20 points and pulled down six rebounds. Braswell finished with 17 points including three treys and four assists, while Zwetolitz came off the bench to score 13 points including a 3-for-3 effort beyond the arc.

        Senior Eddie Ohlson (Allentown, PA/Parkland) had six points and dished out a single-game record 15 assists to become the first men's basketball player to record 500 assists in a career.  His 15 helpers broke the previous record of 13 which was held by Joseph Thomson (1974) and Jim Seaton (1976).  Junior Ed Lapinski (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen)
finished with eight points and a team-high 10 boards to round out the team leaders.

        DeSales is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, November 20th when they host Moravian College in a non-conference game beginning at 8:00 pm.  The game is scheduled to be televised LIVE on Service Electric cable, channel 2 in the local viewing area, for those with Service Electric cable TV service.
