Center Valley, PA, (November 20, 2007) – The DeSales University men's basketball team showed it knows how to win games on the defensive end of the court holding Moravian College to 33.3 percent shooting en route to a 66-50 win over one of its local rivals on Tuesday evening in Billera Hall.
The Bulldogs frustrated and stifled the Greyhound (1-2 overall) offense that came into the game averaging 72.5 points thru their first two games. DSU (2-0 overall) used a 16-2 run over the last 4:45 of the first half to turn a five-point deficit into a nine-point halftime lead and in the second half held Moravian to just 7-of-28 (25.0%) shooting building a lead as high as 22 points to record the win.
During the decisive first-half run to end the half sophomore Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) and junior Matt Zwetolitz (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) led the way as Braswell totaled eight points and Zwetolitz tallied six, including the first five to start the spurt.
The win marks the first time since the 2001-02 season that DeSales has started a season 2-0 as the Bulldogs extend its winning streak over Moravian to seven straight games. DSU finished the game shooting 57.1 percent from the field and out-rebounding Moravian, 35-27.
Braswell finished with a career-high 21 points marking the second straight game he has set a new career-high. Junior Ed Lapinski (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) had 14 points and grabbed six rebounds and Zwetolitz finished with eight off the bench. Senior Eddie Ohlson (Allentown, PA/Parkland) continued his excellent playmaking dishing out 12 assists and sophomore Jim Malatesta (Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) played well off the bench with six points and six rebounds.
The DSU (1-0 overall) run was a 25-4 spurt turning a six-point lead into a 27-point lead over a span of eight minutes. The run featured scoring from six different guys including Braswell with eight points and senior Phil Stricker (Womelsdorf, PA/Conrad Weiser) and junior Zwetolitz with five points each.
Mark Franzyshen totaled 12 points as the lone double figure scorer for the Greyhounds.
DSU takes a few days off for the Thanksgiving holidays and will return to action on Monday, November 26th when they travel to Misericordia University for a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
