Bridgewater hands DSU First Loss of Season, 76-68

Bridgewater, Va. (December 2, 2007) – The Bridgewater College (VA) men's basketball team shot 56.9 percent handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the 2007-08 season, 76-68, in the championship game of the BC/Don Glick Invitational Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams scorched the nets in the first half as DeSales (5-1 overall) clung to a one-point (38-37) lead at the break. DSU shot 66.7 percent, while Bridgewater converted 61.5 percent. The first-half featured six ties and 10 lead changes as junior Ed Lapinski (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) with 15 points and sophomore Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) with 10 points led the DeSales attack.

The game continued to be back and forth with both teams shooting well thru the first 10 minutes as DSU continued to lead by one point, 56-55, with 9:23 remaining but Bridgewater took control over the next four minutes with an 11-0 run that turned a one-point deficit into a 10-point lead, 66-56.

The Bulldogs cut the margin to five points, 71-66, with 1:14 to go on a three-pointer from freshman Rob Schubach (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) and a lay-up from senior Eddie Ohlson (Allentown, PA/Parkland) but BC hit 5-of-6 free throws over the last 1:14 to hold on for the win.

Lapinski and senior Phil Stricker (Womelsdorf, PA/Conrad Weiser) dominated the paint finishing with 21 points on a combined 20-for-25 shooting effort. Braswell finished with 14 points and Ohlson had seven points and nine assists to lead the way.
