Center Valley, Pa. (December 5, 2007) – The DeSales University men's basketball team shook off its first loss of the season with a 76-60 win over Cabrini College in a non-conference game on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.
The win is the 16th straight for the Bulldogs (6-1 overall) at home and the fourth straight over Cabrini in the series between the two teams. The Bulldogs shot 47.1 percent for the game and 51.9 percent in the second half when they out-scored the Cavaliers (3-4 overall) 45-33 en route to the win. DSU also enjoyed a 43-27 edge on the boards had its best shooting night of the year from beyond the three-point arc (36.8% - 7of-19) and from the charity stripe (72.4% - 21-of-29).
The first half opened with DeSales leading by as many as 13 points, 23-10, at the 8:38 mark before CC closed the gap to four points at the half, 31-27. Randy Ried led the charge back for the Cavaliers with 15 first-half points, while senior Jamie McCloskey (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) had an excellent first-half with seven points off the bench.
The start of the second half was back-and-forth for awhile and saw the Bulldogs leading by eight, 56-48, with 8:52 to play when DeSales started to pull away thanks to an 11-0 run over the next two and a half minutes making the score, 67-48. Sophomores Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) and Rob Schubach (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) each had three-pointers during the run and Braswell added a lay-up during the spurt. The lead peaked at 23 points, 73-50, with 4:22 left on the clock before the final 16-point margin was posted.
The trio of senior Phil Stricker (Womelsdorf, PA/Conrad Weiser), junior Ed Lapinski (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) and Braswell combined for 55 points and 28 rebounds. Stricker led the way with 24 points and seven boards, Lapinski recorded his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds and Braswell just missed his first career double-double with 17 points and nine boards.
McCloskey finished with nine points to lead the charge off the bench and senior Eddie Ohlson (Allentown, PA/Parkland) had a game-high seven assists.
Reid finished with 17 points, just two in the second half, as the only Cavalier in double digits.
