Pittsford, NY (November 15, 2008) –
Senior Ed Lapinski (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) tallied 17 points and 19 rebounds leading the DeSales University men's basketball team past St. John Fisher College, 56-50, in the season opener on Saturday afternoon in Pittsford, NY..

DSU (1-0 overall) shook off a poor shooting night and won on the defensive side of the ball out-rebounding Fisher (0-1 overall), 47-31 and holding the hosts to just 37.0 percent shooting.

A close game early (tied at five) saw the Bulldogs take control at the 14:53 mark when junior Jim Malatesta (Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) started a 14-4 run that put DSU up 19-9 at the 7:54 mark of the opening half. Five different Bulldogs scored during the spurt including freshman Bob Zanneo (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) with a team-high five points during the win.

The rest of the first half was back and forth with Fisher scoring the final three points of the half to pull within six, 26-20, at the break. DSU held St. John Fisher to just 28.6 percent shooting in the opening half, but were guilty of 10 turnovers, not allowing the Bulldogs to pull away further.

In the second half, the lead remained between six and 10 for most of the half before Fisher cut it down to three points on a triple by Jordan Gettings at the 6:36 mark. After a quick timeout by the hosts, DSU responded out of the timeout with a quick 7-0 run highlighted by a three-pointer by Zanneo and two lay-ups from Malatesta and Lapinski. DeSales led by at least five the rest of the way before posting the final six-point winning margin.

Lapinski's 19 boards are a career-high, while junior Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) also contributed on the boards with a career-high tying nine and played terrific defense holding one of Fisher's top scorers to zero points on the day.

Sophomore Brian Hunter (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) scored nine points in his Bulldog debut, while Zanneo finished with eight. Malatesta and junior Rob Schubach (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) each added six points in the win.

DeSales returns to action on Wednesday, November 19th when they travel to PSU-Berks for a non-conference game beginning at 8:00 pm.
