Braswell Leads DeSales past Alvernia, 65-44

Center Valley, PA (January 10, 2009) – Junior Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) filled every column of the stat sheet on Saturday leading the DeSales University men's basketball team past Alvernia University, 65-44, to help the Bulldogs stay unbeaten in Freedom Conference play on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.

Braswell finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks to improve the Bulldogs to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the Freedom. DeSales shot an impressive 50.0 percent from the floor and forced 17 Crusader (6-7, 3-2 Freedom) turnovers in the win.

Alvernia got out of the gates quickly opening up a 13-4 lead over the first five minutes before freshman Bob Zanneo (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) gave the Bulldogs a big boost off the bench igniting a 21-2 run over the next 10 minutes to give DSU a 25-15 lead with 4:43 to go in the opening half. Zanneo started the run with a lay-up and added a three-pointer and tip-in for a team-high seven points during the spurt. Junior Rob Schubach (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh), freshman Matt McManus (Malvern, PA/Malvern Prep) and Braswell finished the run with consecutive three-pointers as DSU took an eight-point lead into the locker room.

The second half was back-and-forth with the Bulldogs holding a comfortable lead for the first 12 minutes. DeSales put the game away extending a nine-point lead with 7:37 left to a 19-point lead at the 4:14 mark with a 13-4 run that included all 13 of DSU's points coming from its top three scorers on the season, Braswell, sophomore Brian Hunter (Allentown, PA/Emmaus), and senior Ed Lapinski (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen).

In addition to Braswell's impressive line, Zanneo tallied a season-high 14 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting night including three treys. Lapinski added 12 points and pulled down eight boards in the win.

Alvernia had three players total nine points, Charlie Hughes, David Washington, and Tim Walters in the loss.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday, January 7th as they return to Freedom Conference action hosting Eastern University in Billera Hall at 8:00 pm. For those unable to attend, you can follow the game online via LIVE Stats or LIVE Audio.
