Strong Defensive Effort Leads Bulldogs past Wilkes, 60-35

Wilkes-Barre, PA (January 19, 2009) – The DeSales University men's basketball team held Wilkes University to just 10 first-half points and to 25.5 percent shooting for the game in a 60-35 win over the Colonels in a Freedom Conference game on Monday evening at the Marts Center.

DSU improves to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in the Freedom, while Wilkes falls to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the Freedom. The Bulldogs shot 46.0 percent from the field and committed just eight turnovers in the game while the Colonels converted just 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from the field in the opening half and coughed up the rock 15 times in the game.

Both teams struggled to score in the early stages of the game but with the game tied at six at the 10:21 mark, freshman Bob Zanneo (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) scored eight straight points including two three-pointers to start a 24-4 run to end the half staking DeSales to a 30-10 lead at the break.

Following Zanneo's eight straight tallies, junior Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) scored seven straight points the two ended the half with a Braswell three and Zanneo lay-up with nine seconds left to match the largest lead of the half (20 points) as both teams broke for the locker room.

The second half was all DeSales as Wilkes never got any closer than 18 points with the Bulldogs leading by as many as 29 points (47-18) before the final 25-point margin was posted.

Braswell led the way with a game-high 17 points. He also pulled down a team-high six rebounds and dished out four assists. Zanneo was the only other player to reach double figures with 13 points off the bench including three triples and sophomore Brian Hunter (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) added nine points and three assists in the win.

Tom Kresge had a team-high nine points and John Defeo finished with eight points and seven rebounds in the loss.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, January 21st when they return home to face King's College in another Freedom Conference game beginning at 8:00 pm. If you are unable to attend you can follow the game's progress via LIVE stats or LIVE audio.
