BOX SCORE

Center Valley, PA (October 30, 2009) – The DeSales University field hockey team scored two late goals to upset playoff bound King's College, 3-2, in the final regular season Freedom Conference game for both teams on a brisk Friday afternoon.

The Bulldogs finish their season with two conference wins and improve to 8-11 overall and 2-5 in the Freedom. The win ruins the Lady Monarchs chances of earning a home playoff game as King's finishes the year 9-8 overall and 4-3 in the Freedom. DSU was out-shot 18-5 in the game but took advantage of the chances it had to earn the impressive win.

King's had the first chance just five minutes into the game when Candice Russ had a penalty stroke go wide right that would have given the Lady Monarchs a 1-0 lead. DSU capitalized at the 11:36 mark when junior Kelsey Strowhouer (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) scored her sixth goal of the year, an unassisted tally, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Monarchs tied the game at the 28:22 mark when Russ scored unassisted, taking control of a rebounded shot that was loose in the box and lifting it over a diving DeSales keeper. That score stood into halftime as King's held a 14-2 advantage in shots in the opening half. Also in the first half sophomore Katie Martin (Bangor, PA/Bangor) had helped keep King's scoreless with a defensive save midway thru the half.

KC took its first and only lead of the game 11:53 into the second half when Shawna Walp scored unassisted, her fourth goal of the year. That lead stood for just less than six minutes before Strowhouer took a crossing pass from sophomore Carla Nunez (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) and scored her second goal of the game to tie the score at two.

The game remained tied into the 62nd minute when junior Jamie Matthews (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) dribbled into the circle, around a few defenders and fired a shot from the right side just past the KC keeper and into the corner of the cage for her ninth goal of the year, which turned out to be the game-winner.

King's seemed to tie the game with just under two minutes left as a shot from outside the circle was tipped by the DSU keeper and into the cage, but no one from King's had touched the ball before it crossed the goal line and the goal was disallowed.

Freshman Victoria DelToro (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) was terrific in between the pipes, stopping seven shots to earn her eighth win of the year.
