Baseball Splits Six Games during Spring Trip to Texas

Junior Joe Walsh tallied a win and a save without allowing an earned run during the spring trip to Texas.
Center Valley, PA (March 11, 2009) – The DeSales University baseball team returned from its spring trip out to San Antonio, TX with a very solid 3-3 record, winning three of the its last four games to split the six games they played during the week.

After dropping their first two games to start the trip, DSU rebounded with a 12-6 win over Schreiner University, an 11-8 win over Trinity University, and a dramatic come-from-behind 9-5 win over Wabash College on the final day of the trip. In the win over Wabash, DSU scored six times in the bottom of the eighth inning and took the lead for good on a grand slam home run from junior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton).

During the week several players had solid trips including junior Joe Walsh (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) who went 1-0 with one save, striking out seven in 4.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Travis Hughes (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) also recorded a win in relief, posted a 1.29 ERA in seven innings pitched, striking out 12 and allowing just five hits.

Senior James Niesuchouski (Chester, VT/Notre Dame) also garnered a win pitching a team-high 12.1 innings pitched, striking out 15 and walking just three on the week.

At the plate senior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle) led the with a .368 batting average including a team-high nine RBI's, while Moyer and junior Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) each hit .350 and with a combined 13 runs scored. Seniors Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) and Nick Repas (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) each hit .333 during the week with Bianca adding five RBI's and three stolen bases, and Repas hitting a home run and knocking in three runs.

The Bulldogs return to action this weekend when they host Thiel College. Originally the two teams planned to play a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, but they will now meet for one game on Saturday beginning at 3:00 pm, and a second game on Sunday beginning at Noon. Live Stats will be available for the game played on Sunday at the following link – CLICK HERE.
