Walsh Breaks Save Record; Bulldogs top Scranton, 14-12

Junior Joe Walsh recorded his fifth save of the season and the 14th of his career on Thursday.

Center Valley, PA (April 2, 2009) – Junior Joe Walsh (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) recorded his fifth save of the season, breaking the all-time record leading the Bulldogs past The University of Scranton, 14-12, in a non-conference game on Thursday afternoon.

Walsh came into retire the final two outs in the top of the seventh inning in a game shortened because of darkness. The save is the 14th of his career as he moves past Ryan Lindley for first place all-time. He is now 2-0 on the year with five saves and a 0.77 ERA in 12 appearances.

The Bulldogs pounded out a season-high 19 hits and scored in all six innings they came to the plate in the win. In the first inning freshman Jack Kavetski (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) led off with a triple, scored on a bad relay throw and senior Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) connected on his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-field.

DSU scored once in the second and twice in the third on RBI's from sophomore Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) and freshman Ethan Moser (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown). In the fourth, senior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle) had an RBI single, senior Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) also had an RBI base hit, and Newland knocked in another run with a triple.

The Bulldogs broke it open in the fifth with four runs on a two RBI hit from junior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton), an RBI hit from Hess, and a sacrifice fly from Bianca to take a 13-5 lead. Scranton fought back with four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh until Walsh came in and closed the door when the umpires called the game due to darkness.

Kavetski finished with three hits and three runs, senior Matt Connors (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) also had three hits and scored three times, Hess tallied three base knocks and knocked in two, Bianca finished with two hits, three runs, and three RBI's and Moser totaled three hits to lead the offensive attack. Sophomore Alex Brown (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) earned his first win of the year with 2.2 solid innings of relief.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to action on Friday when they host FDU-Florham in the second game of the Freedom Conference series beginning at 3:30 pm.
