Bethlehem, PA (November 23, 2010) – Four players scored in double digits and senior
Brian Hunter (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) flirted with a triple-double as the DeSales University men's basketball team won its 10th straight game over local rival Moravian College, 70-64, in non-conference action on Tuesday night in Johnston Hall.
The Bulldogs (4-0 overall) have not lost to the Greyhounds (1-3 overall) since the 2000-01 season and are now 20-17 all-time against one of its local rivals. DSU had its toughest shooting night of the season from the field (40.7%) but did shoot 45.0 percent from three-land (9-for-20) and held Moravian to just 36.6 percent shooting for the game.
DeSales started strong opening up an 8-0 as Moravian was unable to score until the 15:13 mark of the first half. The lead was 11-4 before Moravian got within one (13-12) at the 12:16 mark. An 8-2 run highlighted by back-to-back triples from freshman
Drew Wilcox (Lawnside, NJ/Haddon Heights) pushed the lead back to seven with 7:53 remaining in the opening half as the two teams jockeyed back-and-forth before the Bulldogs settled for a 29-21 halftime advantage with neither team scoring over the final 3:33 of the opening stanza.
In the second half, DSU pushed the lead to as many as 13 points before Moravian chipped away and got within four points twice, with the last coming at the 10:05 mark (46-42). The Bulldogs responded though, using a 15-6 spurt over the next six minutes punctuated by three treys from junior
Bob Zanneo (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) to open up a 13-point lead (61-48) and the Bulldogs never looked back from there.
Hunter led three players with 13 points and added a team-high seven rebounds, seven assists, and also had four steals in the win. Sophomores
Brett Moyer (Souderton, PA/Christopher Dock) and
Brian Kerwin (Basking Ridge, NJ/Immaculata) also had 13 tallies with Moyer equaling Hunter's team-high total seven boards. Zanneo finished with 11 points, while junior
Tom Marshall (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) played well with five points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals in 17 minutes of action.
Chris Cullen led the Hounds with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while
Ryan O'Donnell had 15 points and
DJ Strayhorn finished with 10 points and seven assists.
The Bulldogs get a few days off for the Thanksgiving holidays before returning to action on Wednesday, December 1st with their first Freedom Conference game at Manhattanville College beginning at 8:00 pm.
