Purchase, NY (December 1, 2010) – Four players reached double figures including a season-high 16 points from sophomore
Brian Kerwin but the DeSales University men's basketball team went scoreless over the final 8:46 of the first half and fell to Manhattanville College, 67-55, in the Freedom Conference season opener for both teams on Wednesday evening in Kennedy Gymnasium.
The 24th ranked Bulldogs (4-1, 0-1 Freedom) suffer their first loss of the season as they shot just 31.6 percent from three-point land after entering the game shooting 41.3 percent from outside the arc. The Valiants (5-1, 1-0 Freedom) entered the game shooting just 37.5% from deep but connected on 9-of-19 (47.4%) for the game in the win.
DeSales held a 23-20 lead at the 8:46 mark of the first half after a three-pointer by Kerwin and one free throw from freshman
Michael Coleman but the Bulldogs went scoreless for the remainder of the half and MVille used a 14-0 run to take a 34-23 halftime lead. DSU went 0-for-7 from the floor over the final 8+ minutes but more importantly committed seven turnovers helping MVC take a lead into the locker room.
After Manhattanville pushed its advantage up to 14 points on two occasions to start the second half, DeSales used an 11-3 to pull within six points (43-37) on the strength of four points each from senior
Brian Hunter and sophomore
Brett Moyer and a three from Kerwin.
DSU was within six points twice more later in the half with the last coming at the 10:14 mark after a good jumper from junior
Bob Zanneo, but the Valiants used a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to push its lead up to 13 with 6:07 left and DeSales never got any closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Kerwin shot an efficient 6-of-9 from the field and was 3-for-4 from long range leading to his game-high tying 16 points. Moyer totaled 14 points and pulled down five boards, Hunter finished with 11 points and four assists, and Zanneo came off the bench to drop in 10 tallies. Those four combined for 51 of DSU's 55 points.
Manhattanville was led by
Lamar Glass with 16 points,
Trevoy Pointer totaled 12 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, and
Jay Ferriere had 10 points and five assists in the win.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, December 4th when they host Delaware Valley College in another Freedom Conference game and DSU's first home game of the 2010-11 season.
