BOX SCORE
Union, NJ (December 21, 2010) –
Jonathan Jones' putback with four seconds left gave Kean University a 75-74 win over the DeSales University men's basketball who erased an 18-point second-half deficit to take two one-point leads with under two minutes left but could not hold on in the end at Harwood Arena on Tuesday evening.
Junior
Bob Zanneo broke out of his shooting slump to lead the Bulldogs (6-3 overall) with a season-high 20 points, including a 6-for-12 effort from downtown. Sophomore
Brett Moyer recorded his second double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 boards, while senior
Brian Hunter totaled 18 points and had four steals as this trio combined for 57 of DSU's 74 points in the loss.
Jones finished with 14 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, leading four Cougars (8-3 overall) in double digits.
Michael Burton finished with a team-high 17 tallies,
JJ Hladik added 15 points off the bench, and
Kyle Latorre totaled 10 points for Kean.
Trailing by 18 points twice early in the second half, DSU mounted a comeback using a 9-0 run early in the period to get within six points and an 11-2 run later in the half capped by a four-point play from Hunter with 1:52 to go giving DSU its first lead (70-69) since the 6:19 mark of the opening stanza.
Kean answered right back with a three from
Andrew Kirey, his only points of the game, before a lay-up from Moyer tied the game at 72 with exactly one minute left. One free throw from Latorre made it a 73-72 game but a lay-up from Hunter with 25 seconds left set-up the final moments.
A three from Burton was off the mark but Jones was there to coral his 16th board of the game, laying the ball in the hoop with four seconds left. A desperation three from well outside the arc was off the mark at the buzzer by Hunter giving the hosts the victory.
DSU had control of this game thru the first 11 minutes, taking a 20-12 lead, at the 9:10 mark before the offense went ice cold, scoring just two points over the final 9+ minutes as the Cougars used a 22-2 half-closing run to take a 34-22 lead into the locker room. The Bulldogs finished the half shooting just 1-for-16 (.063) after starting the game converting on 9-of-19 (.473) shots over the first 11 minutes of the game.
The 9-0 run early in the second half saw Hunter total four points and sophomore
Brian Kerwin convert a three-point play cutting the lead to six points. Zanneo scored all 20 of his points in the second half, shooting 6-for-10 from three-point land in the second half alone.
The Bulldogs are off until Sunday, January 2nd when they host New York City Tech in the opening game of the Casa Mia Holiday Tournament beginning at 5:00 pm.
