Bulldogs Sweep Series with Aggies; Hughes/Gayeski Earn Wins

Center Valley, PA (March 27, 2010) – The DeSales University baseball team out-scored Delaware Valley, 20-4, in a Freedom Conference doubleheader on a chilly, but sunny, Saturday afternoon, sweeping the three-game weekend series with a 12-1 and 8-3 win at Butz Field as freshman Dan Gayeski (New Castle, DE/Salesianum) and junior Travis Hughes (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) each earned wins in both ends of the doubleheader.

In the opener on Saturday, Hughes improved to 3-0 on the season with five solid innings allowing just two hits and one run. The Bulldogs (10-5, 6-0 Freedom) had this game in hand early, scoring twice in the first and five times in both the second and third innings.

Nine different players had hits, eight different players scored runs, and seven different players recorded RBIs. Sophomore Nick Chiovitti (Thomaston, CT/Holy Cross) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, sophomore Kenny Ridge (Allentown, NJ/Steinert) was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, senior Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) hit a two-run home run and knocked in three runs, and sophomore Jason Hadinger (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Freshman Derek Chrismer (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) scored twice, junior Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, and freshman Chris Zucchi (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) scored twice and knocked in a run.

In the second game, Gayeski scattered seven hits over five innings, allowing just two earned runs and striking out five with no walks to earn his team-leading fourth win of the season. DSU scored all eight of its runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

Another balanced offensive attack led the way as eight of the nine position players had hits, seven of them scored a run, and four players each had two RBI's. Chiovitti, Hadinger, junior Carson Slonaker (East Greenville, PA/The Perkiomen School), and Newland all had two hits and two RBIs. Senior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) had two hits and Feher scored twice in the game two win.

Junior Jeffrey Pinto (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) also looked good on Saturday pitching a scoreless sixth inning in both games to run his season total to seven innings pitched with no runs and just one hit allowed.

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, March 30th when they travel to Montclair State University for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
