St. David's, PA (April 10, 2010) – Freshman Dan Gayeski (New Castle, DE/Salesianum) tossed six dominating innings and junior Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) blasted three home runs, two in game two, helping the DeSales University baseball team bounce back from a tough game one loss (9-6) to split a Freedom Conference doubleheader with a 15-1 game two win at Eastern University on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs stay tied among the top of the Freedom Conference standings, tied with FDU-Florham, who also split a doubleheader this afternoon. DSU is now 15-10 overall and 10-2 in the Freedom Conference, while the Eagles fall to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the Freedom.

In game one on Saturday, DSU jumped out of the gates opening up a 3-0 lead with one run in the second inning and two more in the third on RBI doubles from Newland and sophomore Jason Hadinger (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) but Eastern exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth before a last ditch comeback by the Bulldogs fell short with the tying run at the plate and three runs already home in the top of the seventh inning.

Junior Travis Hughes (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) took the loss, failing to get out of the fourth inning allowing seven runs on six hits to fall to 3-2 on the year. Newland finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, and his third home run of the three-game series after blasting two in Friday's 14-4 win. Hadinger had three hits, including two doubles and freshman Bill Marriott (Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) had two hits in the loss.

In the second game it was all Bulldogs led by Gayeski who was masterful on the mound. He did not pitch to more than four batters until the fifth inning when he wiggled out of trouble allowing just one run after the bases loaded with one out. Overall he scattered eight hits and struck out eight allowing just the one run and walking no one to improve to 5-1 on the year.

Offensively, Newland hit two more home runs, giving him eight on the season and five during the three-game weekend series with the Eagles. He finished with four hits, three runs scored, and three RBIs in game two. Sophomore Kenny Ridge (Allentown, NJ/Steinert) had three hits and two RBIs, sophomore Jack Kavetski (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) had two hits and scored twice, junior Carson Slonaker (East Greenville, PA/The Perkiomen School) had two hits and knocked in three runs and freshman Derek Chrismer (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) had two hits and scored three times to lead the offense in game two.

DeSales gets Sunday afternoon off and will return to action on Monday when they host Rutgers-Camden in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm at Butz Field. LIVE Stats will be available for those unable to attend the game.
