Center Valley, PA (April 5, 2010) – In the regular season it is all about winning series' and the DeSales University baseball team did just that this weekend, taking two of three from King's College with a doubleheader split this afternoon at Butz Field as the Bulldogs dropped game one 3-1 before taking game two 20-8 to improve to 8-1 in the Freedom Conference standings.

In the first game on what was another gorgeous Monday afternoon in the Lehigh Valley, the Bulldogs left 10 men on-base, eight of which were in scoring position, and were never able to get the big hit as Tommy Rozelle tossed 121 pitches to home plate and improve to 4-0 for the Monarchs pitching six plus innings allowing just five hits and one run, while walking six and punching out eight.

The Bulldogs had runners on second and third with one out in both the first and second inning but both times were unable to push home the run. DSU put runners on first and third with two out in the sixth inning but again came up empty and had runners on second and third with no one out in the seventh inning but only able to score one run as the Monarchs held on for the win.

King's scored twice in the fourth inning thanks to two hit batters, a wild pitch, and a double by Brian Mikus and added a solo run in the sixth on a solo home run from Chris Sweeney. DSU's lone run came on a sacrifice fly line out to centerfield by junior Carson Slonaker (East Greenville, PA/The Perkiomen School) plating sophomore Nick Chiovitti (Thomaston, CT/Holy Cross) who walked to lead off the inning.

Junior Travis Hughes (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) took the loss despite pitching well. He gave up six hits and all three runs over 6.2 innings pitched, striking out five and walking just one. DSU had just six hits offensively.

The second game was all Bulldogs from the very first inning. After King's put three runs, two unearned, on the board in the top of the first inning, DSU countered with a six-run bottom of the first inning and never looked back from there scoring in all six innings it came to the plate. The Bulldogs had 20 hits and reached the 20-run mark for the second time this season in the game two win.

Every Bulldog that got an at-bat registered a hit and seven of the 10 players with hits had multiple hits in the game. Senior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) continued his torrid hitting with a 3-for-4 effort including five runs scored and two RBIs in game two.

Slonaker and sophomore Jack Kavetski (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) each had two hits and three RBIs, junior Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) had two hits, two run, and two RBIs, sophomore Ethan Moser (Barto, PA/Boyertown) had three hits and scored three times, freshman Chris Zucchi (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) added three hits and three RBIs, and freshman Derek Chrismer (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) had two hits and scored twice. Chiovitti and sophomore Kenny Ridge (Allentown, NJ/Steinert) each scored twice at the top of the lineup.

Senior Mark Reilly (Cream Ridge, NJ/Notre Dame) earned the win in relief, pitching 1.1 innings allowing two hits and one run, while striking out two. Freshman Dan Gayeski (New Castle, DE/Salesianum) gave up two earned runs over 3.2 innings, striking out four in the game two start.

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they travel to The University of Scranton for a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
