Quick Starts in Each Half Help Bulldogs Top Widener, 77-67

Chester, PA (January 27, 2011) – The DeSales University men's basketball team used a 28-5 start to the first half and a 17-5 spurt to open the second half in a 77-67 win over Widener University in non-conference action on Thursday night in Chester, PA.

The win is the fourth straight for the Bulldogs who improve to 13-5 overall. Sophomore Brett Moyer and junior Bob Zanneo each tallied 18 points to lead the way, while sophomore Brian Kerwin also reached double digits with 10 points. Moyer pulled down a game-high 11 boards to register his fifth double-double of the season.

Senior Brian Hunter finished with nine points and a game-high nine assists, while freshman Mike Coleman and sophomore Greg Peters each had six points off the bench.

Trey Severs totaled 14 points to lead the Pride (9-9 overall) and BJ Smith and Jack Brennan each had 13 points in the loss. Brennan also pulled down 10 rebounds to register a double-double.

DeSales was red-hot to start the game scoring the first 11 points of the contest and eventually led 28-5 after hitting 12-of-18 shots to start the game. Moyer was the leader in the scoring column with 12 of his 18 points during the 28-5 opening game run.

Widener, however, chipped away and then used a 15-2 run over the final 4:46 of the half to pull within just two points (41-39) at the break.

In the second half it was Zanneo leading the charge to open the final twenty minutes hitting three 3's over the first eight minutes as the Bulldogs used a 17-5 run to open the half and build a 14-point cushion (58-44) at the 11:57 mark.

The Pride got within seven points (66-59) once but seven straight points ignited by a three from Kerwin pushed the lead back to 14 points with 4:26 remaining the Bulldogs never looked back from there.

DeSales shot 51.7 percent from the field and did an excellent job sharing the ball, finishing with 25 assists as a team. The Pride shot just 36.6 percent and were only 11-for-38 (28.9%) from the field in the second half.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday where they will begin a very important seven-game stretch to finish out the Freedom Conference regular season with the second game in the season series with Eastern University at 3:00 pm in Billera Hall.
