Washington DC (December 7, 2011) – The DeSales University men's basketball team erased a 14-point halftime deficit, cutting the margin to one point twice in the second-half but eventually fell short as Catholic University held on for an 81-72 win over the Bulldogs in non-conference action at the DuFour Center on Wednesday evening.
Junior
Brett Moyer led the way with a team-high 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds and senior
Bob Zanneo came off the bench to score 17 points and grab six rebounds in the loss for the Bulldogs (2-5). Sophomore
Mike Coleman had 12 points and four assists and freshman
Ryan Griffin finished with nine points in the loss.
Catholic got a game-high 25 points from
Steve Limberiou off the bench on a 7-for-8 shooting night,
Shawn Holmes had 17 points, and
Chris Kearney totaled 12 points for Catholic (7-0).
Turnovers was the killer in the first-half for the Bulldogs as they coughed up possession 11 times, leading to 17 Catholic points. Seven of those 11 miscues came during a critical six minute stretch in which CUA used an 18-0 run to extend a tie at 18 into a 36-18 lead.
DSU refused to let up however and consecutive three's from Zanneo and Coleman quickly cut the margin down to 12 points before the Cardinals ended the half with five straight points and a 45-31 halftime edge.
DeSales stormed out of the halftime locker room using a 16-3 run highlighted by seven points from Coleman and a three from freshman
Jake Hungarter at the 14:07 mark to cap the run as DSU got within a point, 48-47.
The game went back-and-forth over the next several minutes with DeSales threatening the lead on numerous occasions but never able to actually gain the advantage on the scoreboard.
Four straight free throws at the 5:48 mark cut the lead down to two points (66-64) and it was a four-point game (72-68) after a three-point play from Moyer but six straight points from Catholic pushed the advantage to 10 with 1:46 to go and DSU was never able to get any closer than six tallies the rest of the way.
DeSales finished the game shooting 42.3 percent from the floor and an impressive 50.0 percent (12-for-24) from three-point land led by Zanneo's 5-for-9 performance outside the arc which moved him into fifth place all-time.
DSU will return to action on Saturday when they once again travel, taking on PSU-Wilkes-Barre in another non-conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
