Allentown, PA (January 23, 2012) – Sophomores
Kyle Hash and
Paul Pammer combined for all 10 points during a decisive 10-0 run late in the second-half but it was a total team effort on Monday night for the Bulldogs, who handed out a season-high 23 assists on 30 made baskets and shot 53.6 percent from the floor, in a 79-73 win over local rival Muhlenberg College in Memorial Hall on Monday night.
Hash and Pammer each finished with 17 points, a career-high for Pammer who was a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor and added a career-high tying eight rebounds as well. Senior
Bob Zanneo came off the bench to pour in 13 points and junior
Brett Moyer added 10 points. Senior
Tom Marshall also played well with a career-high tying nine tallies and freshman
Michael Guldin was terrific off the bench with a season-high seven points for the Bulldogs.
Muhlenberg (10-7) got a game-high 23 points off the bench from
Gabriel Mercer, sophomore
Austin Curry hit for 15 points, and senior
Spencer Liddic registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards in the loss.
Both teams lit it up from the field and especially from three-point land as DeSales (9-8) hit 11-of-22 (50%) from outside the arc and the Mules converted 14-of-30 (46.7%) from downtown. DSU did a terrific job taking care of the ball, committing just 11 turnovers and the undersized Bulldogs also out-rebounded MU, 32-25 for the game.
This was a game of runs all evening with Muhlenberg starting things off with the first eight points of the game. From there it was all Bulldogs in the first half as DSU out-scored MU, 45-18 over the next 13 minutes to build a 45-26 lead and led by 14 at the break (47-33). DeSales shot a blistering 60.0 percent from the field and hit on 7-of-10 from long range in the opening twenty minutes.
A back-and-forth start to the second half saw DSU leading by 16 (63-47) at the 12:14 mark when Muhlenberg took over. The Mules scored the next 19 points over a span of six minutes to take a 66-63 lead when Hash took matters into his own hands for DeSales.
Hash ended the rough stretch with a big three-pointer from the left wing to tie the game at 66 and converted a lay-up on the next possession off a missed free throw from Moyer as Hash beat Liddic off the line and leaped over the senior, who stood at least three inches taller, for the put-back. Hash wasn't done as he knocked down another three on the following possession, this time on the right wing, and Pammer followed Hash's 8-0 spurt with a lay-up of his own next time down the court to give DSU a 73-66 lead with 3:32 to go.
Consecutive buckets with 36 seconds left by the Mules cut the margin down to two points but Pammer knocked down two freebies on the other end and after an MU miss, Marshall posted the final score with two more freebies with 22 ticks left.
All 10 Bulldogs who saw action in the game posted an assist, including freshman
Travis Bryan, who saw five minutes of action in just his second career game as DSU was short-handed with second leading scorer, sophomore
Mike Coleman, and sophomore
Drew Wilcox both missing the game. Bryan hit a big three-pointer and had a key assist in the big first-half run for the Bulldogs.
The win provides some momentum for DeSales who returns home on Wednesday to take on Manhattanville College in a very important Freedom Conference game beginning at 8:00 pm.
