Center Valley, PA (January 25, 2012) – The DeSales University men's basketball team shot 56.3 percent in the second-half, erasing a two-point halftime deficit to earn a very important 71-67 win over Manhattanville College on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall to put the Bulldogs in a solid position to make a second-half run at the Freedom Conference playoffs with seven games remaining on the year.
Junior
Brett Moyer led the way with a game-high 21 points, including a perfect 9-for-9 at the charity stripe, and seven rebounds. Sophomore
Mike Coleman returned from injury, sitting out Monday's game at Muhlenberg, to score 17 points off the bench, sophomore
Kyle Hash added 11 points, including a 7-for-7 effort from the free throw line, and senior
Bob Zanneo had 10 points off the bench in the win.
Senior
Trevoy Pointer was the lead Valiant with 20 points and five assists, while
Felipe Vargas added 12 points off the bench in the loss.
Jeffrey Ventura added nine points including three of MVille's eight three-pointers.
A back-and-forth first-half featuring seven ties and six lead changes saw the Valiants (9-9, 3-4 Freedom) take a two-point lead into the locker room on a lay-up from
Jack Bramswig with 46 seconds left. MVC held the largest lead of the half at 15-7 before DSU scored 10 straight points to lead 17-15 and eventually by as many as four points.
DeSales took control of the game around the 12:09 mark, embarking on a 15-2 run, to take a 49-37 lead with 8:15 to go that featured five straight points from Zanneo mid-way thru the run on two free throws after a technical foul on the MVille head coach and a three-pointer on the ensuing possession.
Still leading by 12 at the 2:39 mark, Manhattanville staged a rally with three straight three-pointers from Pointer, Vargas, and
Wills Flynn, cutting the lead to six points, but the Bulldogs were outstanding from the free throw line, hitting 30-for-35 for the game and 26-of-28 in the second half, including 17 straight at one point to ice the victory.
DSU shook off a poor shooting first-half to shoot 43.2 percent for the game. The Bulldogs, who have been excellent from the charity stripe all season, continued their success, hitting 85.7 percent of its freebies. DeSales also held a 33-27 edge on the glass.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday when they travel to King's College for another very important Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:00 pm looking to sweep the season series from the Monarchs and earning the tiebreaker at the end of the season.
