Center Valley, PA (January 3, 2012) – A three-pointer from freshman
Jake Hungarter at the buzzer in regulation dramatically sent the game into overtime and gave the DeSales University men's basketball team life, but Berkeley College (NY) scored the first six points of the overtime period and never looked back in securing an 83-77 upset win over the Bulldogs in the opening game of the Red Robin Holiday Tournament.
It is the first time DeSales (4-6) will play in the consolation game of its Holiday Tournament which started in 2001-02. The Bulldogs will take on SUNY-Potsdam (4-6) who fell to Alvernia University (7-3), 60-56, in the other opening round game on Tuesday evening in Billera Hall. Game times on Wednesday night are 6:00 pm (DeSales/SUNY-Potsdam) and 8:00 pm (Alvernia/Berkeley).
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead on the very possession of the game on a three-pointer from sophomore
Kyle Hash but from that point forward it was all Berkeley (8-4) except for a late rally at the end of the second half. The Knights used an 11-1 run over the next five minutes to lead, 11-4, and extended that advantage to as many as 16 points (37-21) in the first half.
DeSales scored six straight points late in the half to pull within 10, before settling for a 12-points deficit (39-27) at the break. The Bulldogs shot just 37.0 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes as compared to 53.8 percent shooting for the Knights. DSU was also troubled by some sloppy play, committing 12 first-half turnovers.
The second-half saw DSU chip away at the lead on several occasions, but each time Berkeley had the answer. The Bulldogs got within five (39-34) early in the half but a three from
Kaseem Williams and five straight points from
Jose Stable pushed the lead back to 11 points with 12:57 left.
Still down 10 (57-47) with 7:30 left again DeSales rallied, pulling within three on a lay-up from Moyer but Williams again had the answer with eight straight points, including two three-pointers, as the Bulldogs had no answer for him on the defensive end.
Trailing by seven after Williams second trey, Hungarter answered with a three of his own, making it a 66-62 game with 1:47 left. Following Hungarter's triple, each had team had two possessions come up empty before Hash cashed in from downtown off an offensive rebound to make it a 66-65 game with 26 seconds left.
The Bulldogs fouled
Jovan Bovell and he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity but DSU was ruled in the lane too quickly on the rebound and Bovell was awarded another free throw and again he missed but
Elijah Craig was there to grab the offensive rebound and DSU was forced to foul yet again. This time Bovell knocked down both free throws with 13 seconds left, making it a three-point game.
On the other end, Hungarter threw the ball into the first row after trying to find senior
Bob Zanneo on the right wing with six seconds left. DSU fouled Williams on the ensuing inbounds and he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 as sophomore
Mike Coleman grabbed the rebound, pushed the ball, and found Hungarter on the right wing where he let go on a three as the buzzer sounded and his shot hit nothing but net sending the game into overtime.
The overtime period quickly went Berkeley's way as Zanneo secured the tip and had a wide open lane to the basket but missed the lay-up as did junior
Brett Moyer on the follow-up attempt. From there the Knights took advantage scoring six straight points to take a 74-68 lead and DeSales was never able to get within one possession on the scoreboard after that in the overtime period, eventually falling by six.
Moyer led the way with 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Hash finished with 14 points and had six rebounds and Hungarter gave DSU a boost off the bench with 12 points. Coleman tallied nine points and sophomore
Drew Wilcox was a bright spot off the bench with seven points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting night in just 10 minutes.
Berkeley got 29 points and seven rebounds from Stable, 25 points, eight rebounds, and six assists from Williams, 12 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks from Craig, and 12 points from Bovell in the win.
In the other opening round game, Alvernia enjoyed a double-digit lead most of the second-half and held off a late SUNY-Potsdam rally in a 60-56 win.
Stefan Thompson had a game-high 21 points,
Cory Boone added 11 points and 11 rebounds,
Josh Vargas totaled 12 points, and
Terrance Bridgers finished with 10 points for Alvernia. Potsdam got 20 points from
Rob Duquette and 17 points and eight boards from
Curtis Pierce in the loss.
