Center Valley, PA (December 5, 2012) – Sophomore
Michael Guldin and junior
Paul Pammer each scored a career-high 18 points and the DeSales University men's basketball team led by double digits almost the entire second-half in a 76-66 upset of 12th ranked Catholic University in non-conference action on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.
Guldin was once again outstanding, tossing in 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting including two big three-pointers mid-way thru the second-half. Pammer was 5-for-9 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line, while also dishing out a team-high four assists and fellow junior
Mike Coleman added 15 points and four assists to lead the Bulldogs.
These two teams came into the game as two of the top four teams in total wins over the last 10 years in the Mid-Atlantic Region with the Bulldogs topping the list with 210 wins and Catholic ranking fourth with 198 wins.
Both teams struggled at the start as each team put on the defensive clamps over the first 6:22 with the Cardinals (5-1) clinging to a 6-2 lead. A three-point play by CUA's
Chris Kearney put the visitor's up 9-4 but a quick 6-0 DeSales (5-2) run gave the hosts its first lead, 10-9, at the 9:27 mark.
The Bulldogs trailed 14-12 at the 6:45 mark of the opening half when a Coleman three ignited a 15-3 run as Coleman started and finished the spurt with a triple and scored eight of the 15 points to give DSU a 27-17 lead with 2:02 to go in the half. A couple of put-backs by
Pete Schramm for the Cardinals trimmed the lead down to six at the break.
The second-half was pretty much all Bulldogs. DSU opened up a 13-point lead 6:35 into the second stanza before a 7-0 Cardinal run made it a six-point game with 12:17 to go. The game went back-and-forth over the next six minutes as the Bulldogs continued to lead by seven points before an 8-1 run highlighted by back-to-back three's from Guldin all but sealed the outcome giving DSU a 60-46 lead.
DeSales led by 15 (68-53) with 1:01 to go before a couple of backcourt steals by the Cardinals cut the margin down to eight points but Guldin, Pammer, and junior
Kyle Hash sealed the win going 8-for-8 from the line over the final 61 seconds to post the final tally.
The Bulldogs shot 50.0 percent for the game and torched the nets in the second-half shooting 58.3 percent. DSU knocked down nine three-pointers on just 18 attempts and continued to be clutch from the free throw line, shooting 85.0 percent (17-for-20). DeSales also took excellent care of the ball, committing just 12 turnovers as compared to 17 assists.
Catholic saw all five starters reach double digits led by
Shawn Holmes with 12 points.
Steve Limberiou added 11 points and Kearney,
Nate Koenig, and
Bryson Fonville each had 10 points. Kearney recorded a double-double with 11 boards but shot just 3-for-13 from the field after entering the game shooting 60.0 percent for the season.
The Bulldogs, who have now won four straight games, return to action on Saturday when they host PSU-Wilkes Barre in another non-conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
