Purchase, NY (January 23, 2013) – Sophomore
Michael Guldin went 4-for-4 from the free throw line with 14 seconds left and four players scored in double digits leading the DeSales University men's basketball team slid past Manhattanville College, 69-64, in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday evening in a chilly Kennedy Gymnasium.
Senior
Brett Moyer led Bulldogs with 14 points and nine rebounds, junior
Mike Coleman had 13 points, junior
Kyle Hash finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, and junior
Paul Pammer also reached double digits with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals in the win. The Bulldogs finish the first-half of the Freedom schedule unblemished with a 7-0 mark.
The Bulldogs never trailed in the game and led throughout after the game was tied twice in the first four minutes and for the last time at six. DSU finished the half strong, scoring nine of the final 13 points to take a 35-27 lead into the locker room. Both Coleman and Moyer led the Bulldogs in the first half with nine points.
The lead hovered between three and nine points for most of the second-half before DSU used a 11-2 run over the span of four minutes to take a 56-44 lead with 7:15 to go. Four different Bulldogs scored and the run was capped by a three from Coleman in the left corner.
DSU continued to lead by nine with just 1:55 to go after a lay-up from Pammer before the Valiants began fouling the Bulldogs looking to get back into the game. DeSales entered the game as one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country but struggled over the next 60 seconds hitting just 2-of-8 as MC clawed its way back in the game and trailed by just one on a three from
Wills Flynn with 16 seconds left.
Guldin was fouled on the next possession and after going 1-for-4 on his first four charity attempts, hit both this time to give DSU a three-point lead. The Valiants worked the ball around and got a terrific look on the other end from
Anthony Maestre from three to tie the game but his shot bounced off the front rim and Guldin tracked down the loose ball and hit two more freebies to ice the win with 0.8 seconds left.
DSU shot 47.1 percent from the field and took excellent care of the ball committing just 14 turnovers as compared to 15 assists as a team. The win moves DSU to 15-3 overall and is the 14th in the last 15 games.
The Bulldogs return home on Saturday when they host King's College in the first game of the second-half portion of the Freedom Conference schedule beginning at 3:00 pm.
