Center Valley, PA (February 23, 2013) – Senior
Brett Moyer recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 19 points and a school-record 26 rebounds but the DeSales University men's basketball team shot a season-low 32.3 percent and just 28.6 percent in the second-half, falling to Delaware Valley College, 77-72, in the Freedom Conference Championship game on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.
The win gives the Aggies (19-8) the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, while the Bulldogs (21-6) hold on to a slim chance of earning an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament which will be announced on Monday afternoon. If DeSales does not receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, they would likely be invited to the ECAC South Region Tournament, also announced on Monday evening.
Moyer finished shooting 5-for-12 from the field and broke the school-record for rebounds in a game with 26 pulls. The previous record had been 22 times, accomplished three times, including the last time in 1994 by
Tony Medina.
Junior
Paul Pammer had 14 points and fellow junior
Mike Coleman had 12 points as the lone Bulldogs in double digits. Sophomore
Michael Guldin finished with six points, three assists, no turnovers, and five steals.
Senior
Jeremy Beckett led the Aggies with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocked shots, sophomore
Jay Donovan totaled 15 points, sophomore
Francis Arnold had 13 points, and freshman
Zach Sly added 12 points in the win.
DVC started strong in front of a packed house in Billera Hall opening up a 16-8 lead 9:07 into the game but DeSales switched to a zone defense and started its comeback using a 13-4 run to take a 21-20 lead with 5:24 left in the opening half.
Down one with 2:17 left to play, the Bulldogs scored the final six points of the half to take a five-point advantage (33-28) into the locker room.
DeSales shot just 36.7 percent for the half but held the Aggies to just 34.3 percent.
The Bulldogs opened the half with a turnover and Delaware Valley countered with a three at the other end regaining the momentum lost at the end of the half. Pammer answered with a lay-up but the Aggies used an 11-3 run over the next 3:15 to take a four-point advantage (42-38) with 15:35 left to play. Arnold did most of the damage scoring seven of the 11 Aggie points during the spurt.
DSU chipped away and a lay-up from senior
Greg Peters tied it at 44 with 13:26 to go and after some back-and-forth action that saw both teams struggle to score, a Moyer lay-up at the 8:44 mark cut DSU's deficit to two points (50-48).
The Aggies took control from that point starting with a three from sophomore Nick Sullivan and then a three-point play from Beckett making it an eight point game (56-48).
The Bulldogs were down 60-51 with 5:20 to go but used a 7-1 run over the next two minutes to pull within three (61-58). On the ensuing possession, DSU appeared to have a steal and an open look at a lay-up at half court but a late whistle and foul gave the Aggies two free throws and they knocked down both making it a five-point game.
A Coleman three at the 2:10 mark made it a four-point game and an Aggie turnover gave DSU the ball back but a miss by Coleman inside the lane again saw DVC go to the line on the ensuing possession and the Aggies knocked down 1-of-2.
The Bulldogs still had a chance to get within one possession but another lay-up inside the lane was off the mark by Moyer and Delaware Valley hit 9-of-12 from the line over the final 90 seconds to ice the win.
The Bulldogs entered the week ranked 12th in the country in field goal shooting and had not shot less than 40 percent all season at home. DSU was also just 3-for-20 from three-point land after entering the week ranked sixth in the country in three-point shooting percentage. It is only the third time all season the Bulldogs have shot less than 40 percent, all of which resulted in losses.
