Center Valley, PA (January 25, 2014) – Seniors
Mike Coleman and
Kyle Hash combined for 42 points and 11 of DSU's 14 overtime points carrying the Bulldogs to a 76-71 overtime win over Eastern University in Freedom Conference action on another snowy Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.
Coleman finished with a season-high tying 25 points, hitting 11-of-12 from the free throw line, while Hash netted 17 points and added a team-high seven rebounds. DSU also got a nice lift off the bench from senior
Cory Schmidt and freshman
Ryan Callahan who each totaled seven points in the win.
Eastern had four players in double digits including
Shaquan Turk with 16 points,
Jordan Diggs and
Malcolm Garrison with 13 points, and
Anthony Parenti with 12 points.
This game was a back-and-forth battle over the final nine minutes of regulation and the entire overtime period that featured 13 ties and 11 total lead changes throughout the entire game.
DeSales seemed to have the game in control leading by 10 points (43-33) early in the second-half but Eastern continued to chip away and a three from Diggs with 8:54 left gave the Eagles their first second-half lead at 49-48.
From there it was back-and-forth the entire time with neither team leading by more than two points until there was just 27 seconds left in the overtime period.
After a three-point play from Coleman with 2:41 left in regulation gave DSU a 58-57 lead Garrison answered with a three and Hash countered with a lay-up on the other end tying the score at 60 with 2:02 remaining. An Eagle turnover saw senior
Paul Pammer miss a short jumper in the post on the next possession and Eastern two offensive rebounds on the next possession eventually leading to two Turk free throws giving EU a 62-60 lead with just 14 ticks left.
DSU did not call timeout and Coleman drove the lane and was fouled with five seconds left. He hit both free throws around an Eastern timeout and a last second heave from Eastern was well long as the game headed to overtime.
The two teams traded baskets over the first 3:31 before sophomore
Cody Deal gave DSU a 69-68 lead with 1:04 left to play. Turk was fouled on the next possession but was only able to convert one freebie, tying the game at 69 for the 13th time.
DSU called timeout this time with 44 seconds left and wanted to get the ball to Coleman on the left wing but he was blanketed by an Eagle defender before finally breaking free in the post where he spun right and finished off a three-point play at the foul line giving DSU a 72-69 edge with 27 seconds left.
Turk drove the lane quickly on the other end but missed his lay-up attempt as Hash grabbed the board and iced the game hitting 4-for-4 from the line over the final 14 seconds helping the Bulldogs move into a four-way tie for first place in the Freedom Conference standings.
Eastern controlled the first 10 minutes of the game, leading 19-13 before a 13-0 run gave DSU a 26-19 lead that it held until the Diggs trey with 8:54 left in the second-half.
The Bulldogs hit 53.3 percent of their shot attempts in the first-half but went cold in the second-half hitting just 33.3 percent. DSU finished the game shooting 44.8 percent and was terrific at the line converting 79.2 percent of its attempts at the charity stripe. DeSales also took excellent care of the ball committing just 10 turnovers.
Coleman's 25 points move him just 22 points shy of becoming the 25th player in school-history to score 1,000 career points.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday when they host Manhattanville College in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 8:00 pm.
