Center Valley, PA (January 29, 2014) – Senior
Mike Coleman scored a team-high 24 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau but Manhattanville College torched the nets shooting 55.1 percent from the field and 61.1 percent from three-point land as the Valiants earned a 72-59 win over the Bulldogs in Freedom Conference action on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.
Coleman became the 25th player in team history to score his 1,000th career point with a free throw at the 3:54 mark of the second-half. He shot 8-for-16 from the field and pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Senior
Kyle Hash was the only other Bulldog (10-8, 4-3 Freedom) in double digits with 10 points.
Connor Quigley was the story of the game for the Valiants, entering the game averaging just 5.4 points per game, but scored a game-high 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting including a 6-for-7 effort from outside the arc. Quigley also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and dished out five assists.
Jack Bramswig finished with 13 points and four blocks,
Anthony Maestre added 12 points, and
Colin Campbell had 10 points and eight assists in the win for MVC (8-10, 4-3 Freedom)
Manhattanville started the game hot and really never looked back as the Valiants hit five of their first six shots to take a 12-7 lead and extended that advantage to 22-13 hitting four three's over the first 6:40 of the game.
DSU chipped away and got within six points at the 2:56 mark before Quigley hit a three with 24 seconds left to make it a nine-point game (33-24) at the break.
Manhattanville hit 7-of-13 from three-point land in the opening half, while the Bulldogs were just 2-for-10 from outside the arc.
MVille extended its lead to as many as 16 points just 4:26 into the half before DSU again began to chip away at the lead using a 10-2 run to get within eight points on a dunk from freshman
Ryan Callahan.
DSU had three possessions to get even closer but missed on all three attempts including a second dunk attempt from Callahan that was blocked by Bramswig as the Valiants pushed the lead up to 15 points (59-44) with 5:56 left. DeSales never got any closer than 10 points the rest of way.
MVC finished the game hitting 11-of-18 from outside the arc as compared to just 4-for-21 for the Bulldogs. DSU did force 17 Valiant turnovers leading to 20 points and had a 14-2 edge in second-chance points in the loss.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday when they travel to King's College for another important Freedom Conference match-up beginning at 3:00 pm.
