Wilkes-Barre, PA (February 1, 2014) – Junior
Travis Bryan came within one block of tying the school-record with nine and added a game-high seven rebounds leading the Bulldogs past King's College, 83-68, in a Freedom Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Scandlon Gymnasium.
Bryan entered the game with just 10 blocked shots on the season, coming with one of equaling that total in one game. The record for blocks in a game is 10 set in March of the 1994-95 season by
Mike Mientus. He finished with six points, seven rebounds, three assists, one steal, and nine blocked shots in just 18 minutes of action off the bench.
Freshman
Brian Laird led four players in double digits with a season-high tying 14 points off the bench, senior
Kyle Hash and sophomore
Cody Deal each had 13 points, and senior
Mike Coleman added 10 points in the win. Hash dished out a team-high six assists.
King's also had four players reach double digits including
Tom Heston and
Dan Rutecki with 15 points each,
Joe Caffrey with 13 points, and
Nate Oliver with 12 points.
The first-half was back-and-forth, especially at the start with six ties over the first seven minutes of the game. DSU used a 6-0 run after the sixth tie to take a 20-14 lead on a jumper from senior
Matt Poorman before King's chipped away and re-tied the game at 29 with 3:58 left.
After a three from Caffrey with 3:17 to go put the Monarchs up one (32-31), the Bulldogs finished the half on a 9-0 run with four different players scoring to take a 40-32 lead into the locker room.
The second-half was all Bulldogs as their lead never went below seven points, 45-38 early in the half, and was as many as 18 points (71-53) with 7:49 left to play.
As a team the Bulldogs torched the nets shooting 61.7 percent from the field, including hitting 70.0 (14-for-20) from the field in the second-half. DSU also hit 50.0 percent from outside the arc and were 17-for-20 from the charity stripe. King's, on the other hand, hit just 36.9 percent from the field and was just 3-for-15 from three-point land.
DeSales returns to action on Wednesday when they host Delaware Valley College in a very important Freedom Conference game beginning at 8:00 pm in Billera Hall.
