Center Valley, PA (February 6, 2014) – Senior
Kyle Hash hit a clutch three-pointer igniting a game-ending 7-0 run that helped the Bulldogs stave off a furious second-half rally by Delaware Valley College in a 75-68 Freedom Conference win giving DSU the season sweep of the Aggies on Thursday evening in Billera Hall.
Hash finished with a team-high 18 points and added four assists, senior
Mike Coleman had 13 points and a career-high eight rebounds, and sophomore
Cody Deal also reached double digits with 11 points to lead the Bulldogs.
Chris Moran was outstanding for the Aggies registering a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, 10 of which were offensive.
Francis Arnold had 18 points and seven steals and
Jay Donovan finished with 12 points and six boards in the loss.
DeSales had complete control of this game over the first 24 minutes leading by 16 points (52-36) at the 15:58 mark and by as much as 17 points earlier in the second-half before the Aggies began to slowly comeback.
Delaware Valley (11-9, 6-3 Freedom) did it on the offensive glass, completely turning around a first-half that saw DSU own the glass, out-boarding DVC, 21-14, over the first 20 minutes of play.
The final 16 minutes was a different story though as DVC grabbed 14 second-half offensive boards, leading to 17 second-half second-chance points, nearly half of its points in the second-half. Moran led the charge, pulling down 10 offensive boards, nine of which came in the second stanza.
The Aggies also forced eight second-half turnovers which led to several of DVC's 11 second-half fast break points.
But the Bulldogs dug in and had the answer late.
After DVC tied the game for the first time since very early (4-4) at the 2:23 mark on a lay-up from
Zach Sly, Hash pulled up with the shot clock winding down from the top of the key and drilled a three-pointer ending a three minute scoring drought that enabled the Aggies to whittle down an eight-point deficit into just the second tie of the game.
Adonis Fleming missed on a tying trey in the next Aggies possession and this time it was the Bulldogs doing damage on the offensive glass as junior
Travis Bryan pulled down a rebound that missed the rim with just three seconds on the shot clock on DSU's ensuing possession, turned, and found Deal who hit nothing but cotton on a short 8-foot jumper to give DSU a five-point lead with 58 seconds left.
A missed three from Arnold was grabbed by
Nick Sullivan but a missed lay-up from Donovan saw Bryan come down with the board and he knocked down two free throws before the clock expired on the Aggies.
DSU had control the entire first-half leading by as many as 14 points (31-17) before settling for a 42-33 advantage on a three from Coleman with 15 seconds left. Hash and Coleman combined for 24 of DSU's 42 first-half points, while Arnold finished with 15 points.
The Bulldogs bench was outstanding led by Hash (18) and freshman
Brian Laird with nine points, out-scoring DVC's pine crew, 32-5. Bryan finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
DSU shot 50.9 percent from the field, compared to just 37.5 percent for the Aggies. The Bulldogs are now in a four-way tie for first-place with five games remaining in the regular season.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they host Misericordia University in Billera Hall with tip set for 3:00 pm.
