Ashland, VA (March 8, 2014) – University of Mary Washington made 12 three-pointers and held the DeSales University men's basketball team to 27.8 percent shooting eliminating the Bulldogs in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, 77-49, on Saturday evening in Krenshaw Gymnasium on the campus of Randolph-Macon College.
The Bulldogs season comes to an end with a 19-10 overall record having won its third Freedom Conference Championship, all in the last six years. UMW advances to the NCAA Sweet 16 and awaits the winner of the Virginia Wesleyan College/Wesley College second round game next weekend.
Senior
Mike Coleman led the Bulldogs with 13 points and fellow senior
Paul Pammer added 11 points. Senior
Andrew Kohler also hit three 3's and finished with nine points.
Taylor Johnson led the Eagles with 22 points,
Bradley Reister finished with 19 points and
Dom Morra added 16 points to lead three players in double digits.
Pammer led the Bulldogs to a quick start hitting back-to-back three-pointers to give DSU an 8-6 lead early but DeSales went cold the rest of the half as UMW finished the half on a 32-7 run with the Bulldogs scoring just two points over the span of 15 minutes during the first-half.
Mary Washington led by 23 points at the break shooting 45.2 percent from the field and hitting seven three-pointers, while the Bulldogs converted just 20 percent from the field and had 10 turnovers.
DSU opened the second-half with some energy and cut the deficit down to 19 points on two free throws from Coleman and a jumper from senior
Kyle Hash but UMW scored six straight points to push the lead back to 25 points and led by as many as 38 points in the second-half before the final margin was posted.
DeSales was making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and third in the last six years. The Bulldogs have won at least one game in each of their last three appearances.
