DJ McCauley combined to go 6-for-6 with five RBIs at the plate and freshman
Andrea Artesani fired a five-inning no-hitter in game two leading the DeSales University softball to a sweep of Freedom Conference foe FDU-Florham on Saturday afternoon by scores of 6-5 and 8-0.
Game One (W/6-5)The two teams traded runs over the first three innings with the score tied at two entering the top of the fifth frame. After the Devils (6-12, 4-4 Freedom) scored two runs in the top half of the inning, DSU answered (7-7, 5-1 Freedom) with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-4 lead.
McCauley drove in the first run in the fifth with an RBI single and junior
Samantha Gibson had the big blow driving in two runs on a bloop single to centerfield.
The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead on back-to-back doubles by junior
Michelle Gessner and junior
Emily Hockman.
In the top of the seventh FDU loaded the bases with no outs. After a sacrifice fly put runners on the corners and cut the lead down to one, FDU's Michelle Mangini hit a hard line drive right at Gessner at short who fired to first to complete the game-ending double play.
McCauley earned the win in the circle scattering 13 hits over seven innings to improve to 3-3 on the year. She added three hits and two RBIs in the game one win at the plate.
Gessner and Hockman each had two hits at the top of the order and Beaumont also had two hits in the win.
Game Two (W/8-0)DeSales dominated the second game scoring three times in the first and five more times in the fifth to win by the eight-run rule thru five innings.
Hockman knocked in Gessner with an RBI single in the first inning and scored one batter later on a home run from McCauley.
In the fifth McCauley and senior
Carly Bartholomew each had RBI singles and freshman
Haley Frati had a two-RBI triple and scored the game clinching run on a single from Gibson one batter later.
Artesani was outstanding in game two allowing just two base runners thru five frames, two walks, firing her first career no-hitter, striking out four.
McCauley was 3-for-3 with three more RBIs and two runs scored and Bartholomew and Gibson each had two hits in the win.
The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Manhattanville College for another Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
