Purchase, NY (April 12, 2015) – The DeSales University softball team scored 12 runs in one inning in game one en route to a 16-3 win and sophomore
Alexa Beaumont hit a seventh inning grand slam leading a game two 8-4 win as the Bulldogs swept Manhattanville College in Freedom Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
Game One (W/16-3)Manhattanville (7-11, 1-5 Freedom) took an early 3-0 lead with three first inning runs and the Bulldogs (9-7, 7-1 Freedom) went scoreless over the first two innings before exploding in the third and fourth frames.
In the third junior
Michelle Gessner started things off with a solo home run and senior
Carly Bartholomew gave DSU a 4-3 lead in the third with a three-run shot four batters later.
In the fourth DeSales sent 15 batters to the plate with 12 scoring including junior
Emily Hockman, junior
DJ McCauley, and Beaumont who each scored twice. Beaumont drove in five in the inning with two-run double and a three-run home run. Junior
Amanda Setzer also had a two-RBI double in the inning.
McCauley earned the win scattering five hits over five innings allowing three runs. Gessner finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Hockman had two hits, two runs, and two RBIs, McCauley had two hits and three runs scored, Beaumont was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs, and Bartholomew finished with four RBIs in the game one win.
Game Two (W/8-4)The Valiants jumped out first in game two scoring once in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. McCauley tied the game in the third with a two run home run and after MVC took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, freshman
Haley Frati gave DSU a 4-3 lead with a two run blast in the top of the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs then added some important insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning when Beaumont hit a one-out grand slam to left center field giving DeSales an 8-3 lead before Manhattanville scored once in the bottom of the frame.
Freshman
Andrea Artesani earned the win scattering seven hits over seven innings allowing three earned runs. Artesani did walk seven and struck out two. Gessner scored twice, Hockman had two more hits, McCauley was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, Beaumont had another bid game at the plate finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, and Frati finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday when they host local rival Moravian College beginning at 3:30 pm.
