St. David's, PA (April 2, 2015) – Senior
Carly Bartholomew hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning of game two and finished the day 6-for-7 with four RBIs leading the DeSales University softball team to a sweep of Eastern University, 4-1 and 6-4, in Freedom Conference action on Thursday afternoon.
Game One (W/4-1)After Eastern (3-15, 2-2 Freedom) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, junior
DJ McCauley silenced the Eagle bats allowing just six hits over the final six frames, striking out nine and not walking a batter.
DSU took the lead for good in the top of the third inning when McCauley doubled and scored on an Eagle error after sophomore
Alexa Beaumont had singled. Beaumont came around to score after stealing second base on a Bartholomew single. The Bulldogs got two insurance runs in the sixth on a two-run home run by junior
Samantha Gibson plating Bartholomew.
McCauley earned her second win of the year. Junior
Michelle Gessner finished with three hits, while Beaumont and Bartholomew each had two hits as part of a nine-hit attack in game one.
Game Two (W/6-4)The Bulldogs were down to their last inning, last out, and eventually their last strike with Bartholomew at the plate with two runners on and trailing by a run when she blasted her first home run of the season in the top of the 7
th inning giving DSU a 6-4 lead and ultimately the win.
Eastern had control of this game from the very beginning scoring once in the first inning on one hit and two walks and plated two more runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead on two hits and a walk. Gibson knocked in DSU's single run in the second inning. Both teams scored once in the fourth to make it 4-2 as freshman
Katie Bearn doubled home Bartholomew.
After a couple of scoreless innings, the Bulldogs trailed 4-2 entering the seventh inning. DSU had runners on first and third with two out when Beaumont singled home Gessner to make it 4-3.
Eastern made a pitching change and up stepped Bartholomew, who after getting two strikes on her blasted a three-run shot to centerfield giving DSU the two run lead and McCauley entered the circle in the bottom of the seventh, earning her first save of the season retiring the Eagle side in order.
Senior
Rachel Vogel earned her first win of the season, pitching brilliantly out of the bullpen, tossing 3 2/3 innings of relief allowing just three hits and one run before McCauley came in to pitch the seventh.
Bartholomew finished game two, 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Gibson also had two hits as every starter in the lineup had at least one hit in the game two win.
The Bulldogs are now off for a week and will return to action on Thursday, April 9
th when they travel to Montclair State University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
