Softball Splits DH at Wilkes; Clinches Top Seed in Playoffs

Center Valley, PA (April 25, 2015) – The DeSales University softball team split a Freedom Conference doubleheader at Wilkes University on Saturday, winning game one 4-1, before dropping game two 7-3.

The split leaves the Bulldogs (13-13, 11-3 Freedom) in a tie for first place with Eastern University but DSU owns the tiebreaker and will be the top seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament next weekend at King's College on Friday and Saturday.

Game One (W/4-1)
DSU opened the scoring in the second inning when senior Carly Bartholomew led off the inning with a home run, freshman Haley Frati doubled and scored one batter later on a single from junior Samantha Gibson.  Gibson scored five batters later on a single from junior DJ McCauley.

Wilkes got one of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning and had the bases loaded one out in the fourth but McCauley worked out of the jam and retired the side in order in two of the final three innings to earn the win.

DeSales added an insurance run in the fifth when senior Kayla Adanalian doubled home Frati.

McCauley earns her seventh win of the year allowing just four hits and one run over seven innings, striking out seven.  She added two hits and an RBI and Frati and Gibson also had two hits.  Bartholomew led the offensive attack with three hits in the win.

Game Two (L/3-7)
DSU took a 1-0 lead in the second game when sophomore Alexa Beaumont doubled home junior Michelle Gessner who walked to lead off the inning.

Wilkes scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead and broke the game open in the sixth, scoring five times to take a 7-1 lead.

The Bulldogs got two runs back in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single from Bartholomew and a Colonel error before Wilkes retired the side setting the final 7-3 margin.

DSU had just six hits in game two with six different players recording a base hit.  Freshman Andrea Artesani took the loss allowing seven runs, three earned, over 5 1/3 innings, walking six.

DSU returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Montclair State University for a non-conference doubleheader.
