Cortland, NY (May 8, 2015) – SUNY-Cortland broke open a 2-2 game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out grand slam as the Bulldogs fell to the Red Dragons, 6-2, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Regional Softball Tournament.
The Bulldogs (17-14) fall into the loser's bracket with the loss and will face Neumann University on Saturday at 1:30 pm needing a win to stay alive. Cortland takes on Heidelberg in the winner's bracket championship game prior to DSU's game.
Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Bulldogs got the run right back in the top of the second inning on a Red Dragon error scoring freshman
Haley Frati.
DSU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore
Alexa Beaumont singled, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Senior
Carly Bartholomew then knocked Beaumont in with a groundout to first base.
Cortland got the run right back to tie the game in the fourth and DSU stranded a leadoff base hit and in the bottom of the fifth, Cortland loaded the bases on two Bulldog errors and a hit by pitch and pinch hitter
Carrie Stoddard hit a two giving the Red Dragons a 6-2 lead and ultimately the win.
McCauley took the loss allowing nine hits and two earned runs over six innings. Senior
Annie Cosentino led the offensive attack with two of DSU's six hits in the loss.
