Cortland, NY (May 9, 2015) – Three runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth led the DeSales University softball team past SUNY-Cortland, 5-2, advancing the Bulldogs into the NCAA Regional Championship game on Sunday morning.
The Bulldogs (19-14) will take on Heidelberg University on Sunday with first pitch set for 10:00 am. DSU will need to defeat Heidelberg twice in order to advance to the NCAA Super Regional next weekend.
DSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning vs. Cortland as junior
DJ McCauley doubled with two outs and scored one batter later on an RBI single from sophomore
Alexa Beaumont.
The Red Dragons (36-13) tied the game at one with their first tally in the third inning and took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning but stranded the bases loaded as McCauley pitched out of more trouble.
DeSales then rallied in its home half of the fifth inning as freshman
Andrea Artesani singled back to the pitcher. Senior
Annie Coseninto sacrificed Artesani to second base and junior
Michelle Gessner reached on a single to second base and moved up to second base on a throwing error on the play by the second baseman also enabling Artesani to score, tying the game at two.
After a groundout from junior
Emily Hockman, McCauley knocked in Gessner with an RBI single, advancing to second on a throw by the shortstop. Beaumont finished off the rally with another RBI single, plating McCauley giving DSU a 4-2 lead.
McCauley set the side down in order in the sixth inning and junior
Samantha Gibson got the Bulldogs another run in the bottom of the sixth, hitting her third home run of the day and the fourth of the season, giving DeSales a 5-2 cushion.
McCauley did the rest easily setting down the side in order again in the seventh as the Bulldogs earned the 5-2 win.
McCauley earned the win, tossing her third complete-game of the Regional, to earn her 13
th win of the season allowing just one earned run and five hits over seven innings, striking out three.
Beaumont finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, McCauley and Cosentino each added two hits as part of the 10-hit attack.
