Center Valley, PA (April 12, 2008) – The DeSales University softball team stayed atop the Freedom Conference standings in first place by sweeping Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon (7-2 and 9-1) to move to 7-1 in the Freedom Conference with its seventh straight conference victory.
The Bulldogs are now 15-7 overall and have now swept King's, Wilkes and FDU-Florham this season. Those three teams were the top three teams in the Freedom Conference pre-season poll entering the year, while the Bulldogs were picked last. Wilkes falls to 17-11 overall and 3-5 in the Freedom.
In game one, DSU opened a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second inning and one in the third before Wilkes hit two solo home runs in the fourth to cut the lead down one run. In the first juniors Kelly Moran (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) and Jamie Pfitzenmayer (Annandale, NJ/Hunterdon Central) each had RBI hits and in the second Moran knocked in another run with a single.
The Bulldogs broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs to take a 7-2 lead which eventually was the final tally. In the fourth, sophomore Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had an RBI, junior Amanda Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) had an RBI single and freshman Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) had a two-RBI single.
Sophomore Kristen Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) earned the win in game one going four innings allowing three hits and two runs. Freshman Larissa Tenley (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) picked up her third save of the season, pitching the final three innings allowing just two hits and no runs, while striking out out two.
Six different players had two hits in game one including junior Maddie Roxandich (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic), sophomore Kyra Monarek (Allentown, PA/Parkland), Kensecki, Lococo, Moran and Piftzenmayer. Lococo and Moran each had two RBI's and Andrews scored twice to lead the way.
In game two, DSU jumped out early scoring three times in the first, four times in the second and two times in the third to open up a 9-0 lead and Lococo did the rest pitching five innings allowing just three hits and one run, a solo home run, to earn her seventh win of the season.
Offensively, Kensecki led the way with three hits, two runs scored and three RBI's. Monarek and Andrews each scored twice and Roxandich, Monarek and Lococo all had RBI's in the game two win.
DSU returns to action on Sunday, April 13th when they travel to York College for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at Noon.
