BOX SCORE

Center Valley, PA (September 3, 2008) – Sophomore Jamie Matthews (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) scored off a rebound of her own initial shot with 15 seconds left to lead the DeSales University field hockey team past local rival Moravian College, 2-1, in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon at Fasching Fields.

The Bulldogs (2-0 overall) had trailed nearly the entire game when Moravian (0-2 overall) got on the board first at the 18:48 mark of the first half when Vita Ranella scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Samantha Bell.

The game remained tied into the half and was still tied with just under five minutes left when DSU made a furious rally. Junior Alyssa Maltese (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown) tied the game at one with 4:28 left to play when she re-directed a shot from junior Catherine McGrillen (Ballymena, Northern Ireland) for her first goal of the season.

Moravian had the ball in the Bulldogs defensive zone with about 45 seconds left when McGrillen and Matthews broke free for a 2-on-1 breakaway. Racing down the field McGrillen passed to Matthews on the left wing inside the circle and fired a shot that was saved by the Greyhounds keeper, but the rebound caromed back to Matthews who fired again and this time found the back of the cage to give DeSales a 2-1 lead and eventually the win with just 15 seconds left in the game as Moravian was unable to get off a final shot.

DSU held a 15-9 edge in shots as sophomore Jen Bessinger (Langhorne, PA/Archbishop Wood) made two saves in the cage for DeSales. Moravian had a 7-4 edge in corners and got six saves from Maura Acox in between the pipes.

DSU returns to the field on Saturday, September 6th when they play two games. The first begins at 1:00 pm when they take on Wesley College and the second begins at 7:00 pm when they take on Shenandoah University with both games being played at Eastern Mennonite University.
