Center Valley, PA (March 31, 2009) – The DeSales University softball team had just four hits in game one and made some critical base-running and fielding errors in game two and local rival Moravian College took advantage sweeping the Bulldogs in a non-conference doubleheader on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon.

In the opener on Tuesday senior Maria DeBonis of Moravian (16-7 overall) out-dueled freshman Katie Morrissey (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) as the Greyhounds scored single runs in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings building a 4-1 lead that stood as the final margin.

Senior Jamie Pfitzenmayer (Annandale, NJ/Hunterdon Central) was a bright spot in the game one loss as she went 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple and run scored. Junior Kristen Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) pitched well in relief, tossing two scoreless innings allowing just two hits.

In the second game, sophomore Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) and the Greyhounds' Jenna Carmon matched zeros on the mound over the first seven innings as the two teams entered the eighth inning scoreless. Both teams had chances to score over the first seven innings but were never able to touch home plate. In the top of the third inning Moravian loaded the bases with one out but a strike out and line out to third ended the threat. DSU's best scoring opportunity came in the fourth inning when Lococo doubled off the left-field fence setting up a second and third, one out situation but a base-running error by senior Amanda Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) ended the threat as she was thrown out at third on the play.

The international tiebreaker was in effect to start the eighth inning and both teams started with a runner at second base in extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Moravian had first and second one out when Sheri Bieniek singled home the first two runs of the game. After a fielder's choice put two outs on the board, a fielding error kept the inning alive and MC capitalized with an RBI single and two stolen bases to steal a third and fourth run.

The Bulldogs showed no quit in the bottom of the eighth inning as junior Kyra Monarek (Allentown, PA/Parkland) singled to right-field to start the inning placing runners on first and third. After a pop out, Pfitzenmayer continued her torrid hitting with a single thru the left side plating DSU's first run.

Junior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) followed Pfitzenmayer with a double over the left-fielder's reach pushing home a second run and putting runners on second and third with one out. A ground ball to second base by Kensecki plated the third run, but another base-running error saw Andrews round third base too far as she was thrown out at home in a rundown ending the game.

Pfitzenmayer (two hits, one run, one RBI), Kensecki (two hits, one RBI), and Andrews (double, RBI) led the offensive attack in game two. Lococo pitched brilliantly in the loss allowing just one earned run over eight innings, striking out four.

DeSales returns to action this weekend when they travel to Manhattanville College for another important Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at Noon.
