York, PA (April 11, 2010) – Sophomore Christine Petrilla (Allentown, NJ/Steinert) hit two home runs and knocked in five runs but it was not enough as the DeSales University softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, both by one run (3-2 and 6-5), at York College (PA) on another gorgeous afternoon.

The Bulldogs (13-13 overall) fall to .500 with the two losses, while York improves to 30-6 overall on the season. In the first game, DSU took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Petrilla hit her first home run, a two-run shot, scoring junior Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton). The Bulldogs had just two base runners however over the next six innings and were unable to score the tying run in the top of the seventh after a lead-off double from Petrilla.

Petrilla took the loss, lasting 3.1 innings allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Senior Kristen Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) made her first appearance on the mound this season and tossed 2.2 no-hit innings allowing just one runner to reach via an error.

In the second game, DeSales again took an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning and again coming on a homer from Petrilla, a three-run shot this time plating Steiner and junior Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) who had each singled. York chipped away at the lead with one run in each of the first four innings to lead 4-3 entering the sixth inning.

In the top of the sixth, sophomore Shelly McCarthy (Allentown, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) doubled to lead off the inning and sophomore Brianna Chilcoat (Northampton, PA/Northampton) walked as both players came around to score to give DSU a 5-4 lead. Lococo stranded two runners on-base in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Spartans won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out as two runners scored on a base hit down the right-field line to win the game.

Steiner went 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, Petrilla added two more hits and knocked in three runs, and senior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had an RBI in the loss. Lococo took the loss, scattering 11 hits over 6.1 innings allowing four earned runs.

The Bulldogs will look to rebound on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Elizabethtown College for another non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
